A healthy indoor climate in schools calls for smart, feasible solutions. At the Koning Willem I College in ’s-Hertogenbosch, this was achieved using mechanical window controls from Teleflex BV. According to operations manager Jesse Verheem, this project demonstrates how natural ventilation, ease of use, and preservation of the building’s architecture come together.
“The demand for proper ventilation in schools has increased dramatically in recent years,” says Verheem. “At the same time, we see that installing a completely new HVAC system is often not feasible. Budgets are under pressure, and installers have long lead times.”

That is why people are increasingly turning to simple, effective solutions. “Opening a window remains the most direct way to let fresh air in. Natural ventilation is reliable, energy-efficient, and immediately effective.”
Teleflex develops and manufactures both electric and mechanical window controls for a wide range of applications. “We supply systems for everything from classrooms to auditoriums and gyms,” says Verheem. “The choice between electric and mechanical often comes down to aesthetics and the specific usage scenario, rather than functionality.” Mechanical systems are commonly used for inward-opening and casement windows. “They’re sturdy, easy to operate, and well-suited for daily use. Plus, they’re available in various designs, ranging from subtle to extra-robust.”
At the Koning Willem I College, the main challenge lay in the existing architecture. The distinctive arched windows were a key focus. “Those aren’t standard windows,” Verheem explains. “The curved top creates a different motion and distribution of force when opening them.”
Added to that was the limited installation space. “There was little room at the top of the window frame. That’s why we opted for a compact claw latch, specifically designed for windows with a single pressure point and narrower widths.”
The solution ultimately chosen for the Koning Willem I College consists of a mechanical system with a crank drive. “This provides precise and stepless control, which is important for regulating ventilation,” says Verheem. “At the same time, the system remains visually in harmony with the building.”
This is especially essential in a historic educational setting. “You don’t want technology that detracts from the ambiance. This system complements the classic character of the space and blends in, as it were.”
The systems used are designed for heavy-duty use. “In schools, everything has to be able to withstand rough handling,” says Verheem. “Mechanical window controls are particularly well-suited for this purpose. They are reliable, low-maintenance, and long-lasting.”
In addition, they make it possible to ventilate specific rooms individually. “This gives users control over their own indoor climate, without having to rely on complex systems.”
For Teleflex, the focus is on the impact on users. “Fresh air is crucial for concentration, comfort, and health,” Verheem emphasizes. “With our systems, we ensure that fresh air is readily available.”
According to him, the project in Den Bosch highlights the added value of custom solutions. “We preserved the existing, distinctive windows and developed a solution tailored to them. In doing so, we’re not only providing technology, but also contributing to the quality of the learning environment.”
