Circular threshold for any prefab home

Circular threshold for any prefabricated house

This summer, Innodeen is introducing the DTS Varipro Plus, a new profile-independent circular threshold for the plastic market. By using this modular threshold, clients and installers are also staying ahead of the legislation that will take effect in 2030. “That legislation is becoming increasingly strict and important. Sustainable construction requires demonstrably sustainable materials. The Varipro Plus already meets those requirements,” says Roald Haneveld, commercial technical advisor at Innodeen.

The new threshold is made of Hollodeen, a raw material consisting of up to 90% recycled plastic. “It is also 100% circular because we can fully reuse the Hollodeen. The material offers good thermal performance and is wear- and impact-resistant. This results in a long service life.”

Characteristics that result in a low MKI and LCA score. “These, in turn, result in a Category 1 rating in the National Environmental Database. Category 1 data is independent and verified by external parties, and this will become increasingly important in the coming years for clients such as homeowners” associations and housing cooperatives that want to make their homes more sustainable. They search the NMD for materials and products with the least possible environmental impact,” says Haneveld, who adds that fiberglass-reinforced thresholds score significantly lower.

Basic Profile in Three Sizes

Varipro Plus consists of a base profile that, when supplemented with connectors and adapter strips, can be easily customized in a modular fashion. Innodeen is not tied to specific molds, so the base profile is available in the three widths used by the various profile manufacturers in the plastics market. Haneveld: “Those are the widths 115, 116, and 120 mm. This makes Varipro Plus completely independent of any specific profile manufacturer.”

Once assembled, the result is a wind- and watertight window frame. “The sill can be used in new construction and renovation projects, but it also offers advantages for timber-frame construction and the prefab market. Water drains from the Varipro Plus toward the front rather than through chambers to the sides. This prevents the frame components from getting wet, thereby extending the service life of the entire window frame assembly.”

Easy (re)assembly

According to Haneveld, the modular design of the new threshold makes installation easier for installers. “The well-thought-out design of Varipro Plus makes it easy to install on the jambs or in the opening and also ensures that the threshold delivers the required high-quality technical performance immediately after installation.”

The modular system also offers advantages when it comes to reinstalling the plastic window frames. “Future legislation will require manufacturers to take back their products that have been installed in a building for recycling. This means that plastic window frames must be installed in the mounting frames in a way that allows for removal. The same applies to our thresholds. We take those back as well for full reuse.”

Window frame is fully recyclable

In the run-up to these new regulations, profile suppliers are already actively engaged in recycling plastic. “The VKG is even working on a circular plastic facade economy. For this, it is not only essential to be able to easily reassemble plastic components in their original condition, but also to be able to fully reuse all parts of the window frame. Our Varipro Plus sill makes a window frame—and thus also the 100% bottom sill—recyclable.”

Positive initial reactions

During the development of Varipro Plus, Innodeen involved both profile manufacturers and fabricators in the process. “The concept has been well received, and the profile manufacturers certainly recognize its added value. The fabricators have also responded enthusiastically.” According to Haneveld, Innodeen deliberately chooses to involve profile manufacturers and fabricators in the development of new products. “These partners possess a great deal of specialized knowledge, and their suggestions and requests allow us to further refine the final product. This knowledge-sharing during the development phase always benefits the final result.”

Consciously Sustainable

Innodeen has been working for some time on the development of circular thresholds and other plastic and biocomposite products. A conscious choice, says Haneveld. “It has been known for years that, starting in 2030, increasingly stringent requirements will be imposed regarding the use of sustainable products in construction. And 2030 is no longer a distant future—it’s closer than many people think. We’re already ready to meet those requirements.”

In this regard, the manufacturer can work together with the plastics industry. “Profile manufacturers are already working on recyclable profiles or profiles made from recycled materials. Furthermore, through the VKG, we have a partner that mandates sustainable products for its growing group of member companies. This way, as an industry, we can collectively ensure that we are ready to meet the demands of the future.”
