Comfort and Energy Efficiency in the Home
This recently built home was designed according to the principle of lifetime-ready living. Not only is this home comfortable, but it is also ready for the future. Convenience, energy efficiency, and a healthy indoor climate were central to the design. Thanks to the combination of various DUCO solutions (natural ventilation, smart controls, and well-designed sun protection), the home offers a pleasant indoor climate at any time of day—today and in the future!
The home consists of two stories, with the ground floor and the first floor each equipped with its own ventilation system. This was a deliberate choice, as the home was built to be accessible throughout one’s lifetime. Over time, the upper floor will be used little or not at all.
Installing two ventilation systems provides the flexibility to optimally regulate the indoor climate in every room, at every stage of life. This contributes to both the comfort and energy efficiency of the home.
On the ground floor, where Richard Geraerts and his partner live, natural ventilation was chosen using TronicVent ventilation grilles and the DucoBox Focus—also known as the Duco Focus Tronic System. Richard, Sales Manager for the Netherlands BU Facade at DUCO, says: “The Duco Focus Tronic System uses electronically controlled supply vents. Based on CO2 measurements, among other factors, the indoor climate is closely monitored. These grilles open or close automatically depending on ventilation needs. The exhaust of contaminated air is, in turn, also demand-controlled via the central ventilation unit, the DucoBox Focus. This results in optimal energy savings.” According to Richard, this ensures efficient, demand-driven ventilation, which is crucial for the indoor climate in a space where people spend a lot of time.
Ventilation wasn’t the only consideration. Measures to prevent overheating were also taken into account during the home’s design. External sunshades proved to be the solution. External sunshades block the sun’s rays before they can heat up the glass. This leads to a significant drop in the indoor temperature, creating a more comfortable indoor climate. “In this case, we installed manually operated sliding panels on one side of the home. The DucoSlide sliding panels offer flexibility: they let in plenty of natural light, provide a panoramic view of the outdoors, and can be used to enclose the canopy over the side terrace.”
“After living in our home for a while, we realized that the sliding windows on one side weren’t enough to make the indoor climate exactly the way we wanted it. That’s why we decided to install sliding windows on the other side of the building as well. That will significantly improve our living comfort.”
The upper floor houses the children’s bedrooms, an office, a restroom, and a bathroom. Here, the DucoBox Silent handles the exhaust of contaminated air. This is a compact and quiet ventilation unit installed in the attic. In the bathroom, a humidity sensor ensures optimal ventilation when needed. A control switch is also provided so that the system can be operated manually. The toilet is equipped with a simple switch integrated into the light switch.
To provide a supply of fresh air, the bedrooms are equipped with DucoTwin 120 ventilation grilles. These grilles combine natural ventilation and exterior sun protection in a single system. The fabric awning helps prevent overheating. In addition, the system comes standard with acoustic insulation material.
Little to no direct sunlight enters the office space. For this reason, no sunshades have been installed in this area. Fresh air is supplied here through a TopVent ventilation grille.
