Meet the Netherlands' first insulating, biobased and circular front door

Weekamp Deuren's doors excel not only in style, but also in sustainability and circularity. “Every door we supply is produced as a unique door,” illustrates Roger Wiltinge, Head of Sales Renovation & Industry at Weekamp Deuren. “This allows architects, housing corporations and private homeowners to implement specific wishes. From wood type to size, style and finish. All doors are ‘made to order’ and produced to the highest quality standards in our factories in the Czech Republic and Portugal, where there is a strong focus on automation, sustainability and circularity. This mix of innovations has led, for example, to our BioComfort front door with 100% biobased insulating wood fiber core and 100% re-used FSC-R certified edge wood, with which we are anticipating a bright and sustainable future.”

The BioComfort front door is constructed with a 7 mm thick top layer of Medite Tricoya Extreme, a bio-based insulating wood fiber core and FSC Recycled certified edge wood.

The BioComfort front door will be officially introduced this year, once Weekamp Deuren completes the life-cycle assessment (LCA) study of the front door and the insulating, biobased and circular front door is included in the National Environmental Database (NMD).

“With this innovative front door, we are responding to the intrinsic motivation of more and more architects, construction companies and homeowners to minimize ecological impact, eliminate waste and combat resource scarcity,” Wiltinge says. “For example, by actively collecting old doors and windows for reuse. In addition to new construction, Weekamp Deuren's doors and windows are mostly used in the project-based renovation market, in which we completely unburden clients. For example, we take care of the residents” appointments and on-site measuring. We then start production, after which our assembly teams remove the old elements, install new elements and deliver the houses extremely neatly to their residents."

Social and environmental impact

The old windows and doors coming out of the homes are not thrown away, but carefully harvested and offered to a sheltered workshop. “Here, wood, glass and metals are dismantled by people with a distance to the labor market, for processing into new, usable parts,” Wiltinge said. “In this way, social impact and environmental goals come together nicely.”

Edge wood from old doors

Whereas all glass and metal are offered to outside companies for recycling, the harvested wood is cleaned and cut back into two usable sizes of edge wood at the social workshop itself. “Then the clean and cut-to-size pieces are laminated and finger-joined,” Wiltinge says. “The finger-joined beams are sustainably reused as recycled edge wood for our BioComfort front doors. Thus, our BioComfort front doors for 100% consist of re-used FSC-R certified edge wood! Moreover, the entrance doors are 100% recyclable at the end of their life cycle. A great achievement, with which we want to close the raw material chain as much as possible, without sacrificing the quality, high insulation values and design freedom one has come to expect from us and our parent company Deli Home.”

Unique biobased insulation core

The insulating core is made of a 100% biobased wood fiber board. With a GND insulation class 2 or 3 (well/very well insulated), this board falls into the same insulation class as standard XPS foam insulation, but completely organic. “That makes the BioComfort one of the most sustainable front doors in the Netherlands,” says Dr. K. K., president of the BioComfort.”

KOMO certified

“7 mm thick Medite Tricoya Extreme was chosen as the top layer of the BioComfort front door, ensuring an extremely tight and flat surface,” Wiltinge says. “WITHOUT the risk of cracking in the door surface.” The BioComfort door line is fully KOMO certified, which is very important under the Building Quality Assurance Act (Wkb). The front door comes standard in a thickness of 54 mm.

Biobased insulating stacking sill rear door

Following the BioComfort front door, Weekamp Deuren's insulated rear door will soon be available with a bio-based insulating core. “As a result, residents benefit from a sustainable entrance around their home, as well as reduced energy consumption, improved security and increased living comfort,” concludes Wiltinge. “Also, the door helps to reduce noise from outside. Because we are again using a Medite Tricoya Extreme top layer combined with an insulated core in production, residents are assured of an A-grade closed surface on the outside and a high-quality insulated interior.”
