BUVA celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. And no, that's not a joke: on April 1, we will celebrate the anniversary! What once began as a Rotterdam trading company in building hardware, has grown into a knowledge partner for the construction industry. With smart solutions for safe, comfortable and sustainable homes.According to director Peter Laros above all, the anniversary says something about the strength of the company.“Eighty years of successful business in this sector is special. In all these years, BUVA has always adapted to changing market conditions and developments in the construction industry. At the same time, we have always remained ourselves: a down-to-earth family business with an eye for each other, a Rotterdam mentality and the drive to really help clients move forward.”
BUVA was founded in 1946 as a trading company in hardware. In the decades that followed, the company grew into an important supplier for the window and door industry. What has characterized BUVA all these years is the strong focus on cooperation with clients. Many relationships have existed for decades. That approach still forms the basis. But BUVA's role has changed. Today BUVA develops its own products, has its own R&D department and test center, and supports clients with knowledge, advice and process improvement. In doing so, BUVA collaborates with parties throughout the building chain: from architects and housing corporations to contractors and property maintenance companies, carpentry factories and the frame and door industry. With solutions for both new construction and renovation.
“We have long since ceased to be just a supplier of products,” he said.” says Peter. “Our strength lies precisely in combining assortment, knowledge and innovation. With this, we help customers organize their work smarter and more efficiently.”
In recent years, BUVA has taken a clear strategic direction. With the positioning Building Smart Together the company emphasizes collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing. At the same time, the product portfolio has been sharpened. Some product groups have been phased out, while BUVA is instead investing in the core range to develop and manufacture new solutions for the industry.
Cooperation with sister company Holonite plays an important role in this. Combining knowledge and expertise creates new opportunities for product development and marketing.
The coming years will be marked by major changes in the construction industry.More homes must be built, while costs are rising and personnel are scarce. At the same time, there is increasing pressure to build more sustainably and make homes more resistant to heat and climate change.According to Peter, this is where companies like BUVA have a clear role to play. “The industry needs to build smarter, more efficiently and more sustainably. Think of industrialization of housing construction with prefab solutions and housing factories. We respond to that with sustainable solutions and efficient processes. This is how we help the sector build smarter.”
BUVA therefore invests heavily in innovation and product development. For example in the areas of fire safety & escape technology, wind & water tightness, sustainability and circular building.
Innovation has been in BUVA's DNA for decades. Over the years, the company introduced several product innovations that became a standard in the market. Think of the BUVA Multifin multi-point lock, the BUVA Atlas Inside hinges and the Isostone lower sills. BUVA has also built a unique position in the Netherlands with a self-produced line of toughened glass windows.
Innovation is of course reflected in our own R&D department, product development and testing facilities. Digitalization and new technologies are also playing an increasing role. Think of the application of data and AI to organize processes smarter and support clients better. BUVA actively invests in these developments and explores how new technologies can add value for clients in practice.
For the coming years, Peter sees plenty of growth opportunities with BUVA.The company wants to continue to grow within existing markets, exploit international opportunities and continue to invest in sustainable innovation with distinctive solutions.
But just as important is the culture of the company. “Ten years from now, I hope BUVA is still going strong,” he said.” says Peter. “With an organization where people like to work, where we build strong relationships with customers, suppliers and partners. If we continue to move with change as we have for the past eighty years, we will certainly be fine!”
