Sills as the key to future-proof construction

Innovative solutions for rapidly changing construction industry at HoutPro+

The construction industry is changing rapidly. Prefabrication is now commonplace: complete facades and walls leave the factory hall and are placed ready-made on the building site. This offers speed and efficiency, but also places new demands on detailing and weather protection. Venster Techniek, developer and manufacturer of under sills for wooden and plastic window frames, is responding to this with smart innovations that will be the focus of the upcoming HoutPro+ trade fair in Den Bosch.

Sills as the key to future-proof construction 1

An important trend is building without a cavity. Where previously rainwater could run off through an air cavity, now there is often one thick structural wall, filled with insulation and finished with an outer shell. However, the water still has to go somewhere. Without a cavity, moisture can accumulate in seams and cracks, migrate into insulation or even penetrate. To prevent this, new solutions are being developed, such as films that are vapor permeable but block moisture, or layers that act as waterproof jackets. With this, the importance of connections around window frames is growing. It is precisely there that water must be prevented from finding its way inside.

On top of that, the Dutch climate is becoming more erratic. Summers have short, heavy showers, while in autumn and winter the wind pressure on facades increases. High-rise buildings, increasingly common in densifying cities, intensify that pressure. Facades have to deal with more rain and wind, which means that every connection has to be water- and wind-tight. At the same time, regulations dictate that transitions to living spaces must be low-relief, so that accessibility and protection go hand in hand.

Innovations from practice

Window Engineering develops solutions that respond to these changing conditions. Three recent examples:

Fire resistant sill for indoor applications
Especially for high-rise buildings without galleries, where front doors open onto a stairwell or elevator shaft, Venster Techniek developed a sill that guarantees fire safety. Wind and water tightness play less of a role here, but fire resistance all the more. The new sill is fully tailored to this situation and offers a reliable fire-resistant solution.

Developed VTD lower sill
With the new legal requirement that all transitions to accommodation areas must be low-relief, Venster Techniek has further refined the existing VTD sash. The result: an internal sill solution with double stop and only 20 mm curb. This sill is tested at 450 kPa, KOMO-certified and suitable for high-rise buildings where the wind and rain pressure is considerably higher.

New exterior door solution with concealed overlay door
Inspired by a request from [Jv1] partners and developed in collaboration with Sluit.nl, an innovative solution was created for exterior wooden doors with a concealed overlap door. The new hinge and lower sill detail on the VTD lower sill ensure that the double seal continues throughout, even at the hinge point. The result: a door that looks like a rebated door, while the concealed placement in the frame simultaneously provides a clean appearance and higher performance in wind and water tightness.

Development as a continuous process

At Window Technology, continuous innovation is at the center. The company is relentlessly committed to further development: by testing, researching, leveraging feedback and working intensively with partners. This commitment does not stop at the first hurdle even when ideas take time or unexpected challenges arise, Venster Techniek continues to build. It is precisely this perseverance that makes the company realize better, more reliable and future-oriented solutions step by step.

Window Technology itself calls this: smart base for building. The lower sill is the foundation of a well-fitting and durable window frame. By designing smartly and continuing to innovate, the company is helping the industry move forward at a time when building methods and conditions are changing rapidly.
