A 54 mm door: small difference, big result

A 54 mm door: small difference, big result

Replacing a 38mm door with a 54mm door increases the insulation value significantly. A small difference with a big result: it ensures a pleasant and comfortable home, lower energy bills and CO2 reduction.

In new construction, a 54mm door is the standard

For new construction, the 54mm door has been the standard for 20 years, and for very energy-neutral homes, doors as thick as 67 to 80mm. In existing homes, however, technically obsolete and poorly insulating 38mm doors, are often replaced by new, equally poorly insulating and draft-resistant 38mm doors. While applying a slightly thicker, high-quality insulating 54mm door with insulating glazing and the right seals gives a much better result. The limited additional cost for a 54mm thick door can be recovered in a short time.

Moreover, it contributes to climate goals and the desire for low-carbon construction.

Tackling entire homes gives the most results, but even with small adjustments during regular maintenance, significant steps can be made. Precisely by opting for a 54mm door when mutating or individually replacing a door, much can be gained and a contribution made to the long-term goals of making our country energy neutral.

Insulation class provides clarity

From April 2021, the GND security label will allow the insulation performance of the door to be read. Scanning the label with the QR code on the hinge side of door will reveal the insulation class of the door: 0 (insufficient insulation, U=3.4), 1 (somewhat isolated, U=2.4), 2 (well insulated, U=1.65), 3 (highly insulated, U=1.1) or 4 (extra well insulated, U=0.8). This makes it much easier for everyone to check what has been applied in the house. Even when checked by an energy advisor, it is now easy to see what value the door has and what the actual insulation value is that can be included in the calculation of the house index.

Doors from GND member manufacturers can be identified by the guarantee and security label on the hinge side of the door. With this, in addition to the insulation class, the performance in terms of sound, fire, smoke and burglary resistance and the origin of the door can also be checked.

Detailed information on GND insulation classes can be found on GND's website, www.gnd.nl

GND is the umbrella organization of leading Dutch door manufacturers. The member door manufacturers make a concerted effort to ensure optimal quality and performance of interior and exterior doors, to promote trust between manufacturers and their customers and social issues such as safety and sustainability.
