Introduction of a new hinge series for the Benelux region

Exclusively for trade magazine Profile, we spoke with Tonny Maes, specialist consultant at Dr. Hahn. The company is one of the most innovative manufacturers of door hinges for metal and plastic profiles and is based in Mönchengladbach. We put some questions to Maes.

Dr. Hahn is launching a new hinge series for the Benelux market. What makes the Clamp Band AT so special?

Tonny Maes: The Klemmband AT was specially developed with the needs of the Benelux market in mind, where the Eurogroove in aluminum profile doors is widely used. Our new hinge responds perfectly to this with a smart clamp construction that works completely without pre-drilled holes. Moreover, the hinge is available for 16 mm grooves, which is standard in this region.”

What about performance? What can users expect in terms of carrying capacity?

Tonny Maes: “The performance is impressive. The two-piece version carries wings up to 120 kg, and the three-piece up to 150 kg. For higher weights, we can offer project-specific solutions. The core is a 10 mm thick solid stainless steel pin that ensures stability. Thanks to the design matched to the profile, the hinge also fits seamlessly into the door profile.”

And in terms of assembly - how easy is the system to install?

Tonny Maes: “Very simple. The unique thing about this system is the clamping block, which can be placed in the groove at any point. That means maximum freedom during installation on the construction site. You don't have to fix anything in advance. The assembly can also be done by one person.

Visually, the hinge is almost unnoticeable. Was this a conscious choice?

Tonny Maes: “Absolutely. With a roll of only 18 mm in diameter, the hinge looks very compact and elegant. This makes it visually disappear into the background, so it does not interfere with the design vision of architect or customer. And with a height of only 132 mm for the two-piece and 167 mm for the three-piece hinge, they are among the smallest on the market.”

You also mention a patented adjustment feature. Can you elaborate on that?

Tonny Maes: “Gladly. We have developed a fully integrated adjustment mechanism between frame and sash. Even with extreme adjustment, the hinge parts remain visually aligned. That ensures a clean, consistent appearance, regardless of adjustment.”

How flexible is the Clamp Band AT when it comes to adjustment?

Tonny Maes: “The hinge can be adjusted in six directions, without having to loosen screws. So you can adjust it while the door is already fully hanging. We are talking about a height adjustment of ± 2.5 mm, a horizontal adjustment of ± 1.5 mm and a tightening adjustment of ± 0.3 mm via the bearing bush. The sash is simply lifted for a moment and adjusted. Right! This is efficient and time-saving.”

Is the hinge universally applicable?

Tonny Maes: “Yes, it can be used both left and right and is suitable for inward and outward opening doors. It also eliminates the distinction between top and bottom hinge. And the hinge is completely maintenance-free.”

What finishes are available?

Tonny Maes: “We use only high-quality materials, with extruded aluminum for the hinge bodies. New is the finish in Hahn Trinox, which is very similar to brushed stainless steel. In addition, all RAL colors and the EV1 anodized variant are possible. So there is a lot of room for individuality.”

Finally, what about certification?

Tonny Maes: “The Klemmband AT has now been successfully tested by an independent institute in accordance with EN 1935:2002 and complies with band class 13. This makes it suitable for doors that are used intensively - such as in public or commercial buildings. In addition, it meets corrosion class 4, with potential up to class 5. That means maximum protection even under demanding conditions.”
