With the right sealant and adhesive, carpentry shops can make sturdy window frames

Kitting is a craft in itself, but perhaps a sealant dispenser will bring an easier solution

The sealing and bonding of window frames is a real trade, which requires the necessary knowledge and experience of the personnel. After all, windows, doors and sliding windows are an important part of any facade and therefore have a great deal of influence on its air and water tightness. Hermann-Otto GmbH of Fridolfing has been developing, manufacturing and supplying innovative solutions in the field of sealing and bonding for more than 140 years. With the OTTOSEAL® S 120 glass lath sealant and the OTTOCOLL® S 81 2-component adhesive, the German specialist introduced two solutions that are also being reinforced specifically to the carpentry industry.

Founder Hermann Otto initially concentrated on the production of putty, but continually expanded the product range. He eventually built that small business in his backyard into a medium-sized family business.

"We strive to provide a suitable solution for every requirement of our customers. For over 140 years, the name Hermann-Otto has stood for uncompromising quality, made in Germany. Time and again we develop and produce innovative solutions - whether sealing or bonding," says Paul Bosch, who himself has been working for this company on the Dutch market for 23 years.

"We have since become one of the biggest players in Europe, supplying products for a variety of sectors, including manufacturers of windows and frames in aluminum, PVC or wood. Thus, today we want to highlight two products that we want to roll out reinforced to carpentry factories: sealant OTTOSEAL® S 120 and 2-component adhesive OTTOCOLL® S 81."

Rigid, robust window frames

A sealant is often inconspicuous but is used today to seal joints, gaps and holes. Like glue, this product has become indispensable in the construction industry to create rigid, sturdy window frames and other structures.

"Our OTTOSEAL® S 120 is an abrasion-resistant, fast-acting premium glass lath silicone solution for sealing double-glazing in wooden windows, connections at windows and doors, glass elements or joints in facades. This product, available in more than 40 standard colors, is mold-resistant and non-corrosive and is characterized by excellent adhesion to many substrates and very good weather, aging and UV resistance," Bosch continues.

"For manual or machine bonding of glass in a frame use our OTTOCOLL® S 81. This is a 2-component adhesive with high notch and tear resistance, fast curing and secure through-curing, which also exhibits very good weather, aging and UV resistance. This adhesive can also be used without problems for the assembly of elements that were already previously coated with Remmers lacquer. This was evident from the 6,000 tests we conducted during a thorough inspection."

Kitting is a profession

Also, the OTTOSEAL® S 120 can be applied both manually and mechanically. However, caulking is a real trade and so it is not obvious to always find skilled personnel with the necessary experience for this purpose. "WINTECH, the French specialist in the development and production of, among other things, sealant dispensers for wooden and aluminum windows, offers a solution, with which every joinery can seal frames. The systems, equipped with glass and glass slats, are pushed into the vertical machine via the feed conveyor, after which the kitting process begins. The finished window frame comes out of the machine automatically and can be transported to the construction site after complete drying. This automatic machine is suitable for windows with profile thicknesses up to 300 mm, which is interesting for the Dutch market, where people sometimes dare to integrate unusual window frames in classic buildings," says Paul Bosch.

"With our innovative sealants and adhesives, we at Hermann-Otto GmbH want to focus more strongly on the larger carpentry factories in the Netherlands. However, this is still a traditional sector, which does not easily step into the unknown to try something new. However, we want to convince them that with our products and techniques they can make window frames even better and more efficiently, even with burglar resistance in accordance with RC2 as well as RC3."
