25% of heat and energy losses in buildings occur around windows and doors. This is usually due to air leaks, cracks and/or poor connections. With Soudal Window System (SWS), Soudal offers a professional system solution for the airtight sealing of window and door connections, in compliance with current EPB guidelines and legislation.
The specialist always offers a suitable solution, regardless of construction and installation method, for new construction and renovation, even when "passive" is the standard. For example, at the Premium Passive House in Etten-Leur, the choice was made to install window frames on the SoudaFrame SWI system in combination with PU foam Flexifoam and liquid membrane Soudatight SP.
This first Premium Passive House for the Benelux is in Etten-Leur. First and foremost, it is a building designed according to the passive house principle and thus has an extremely low primary energy demand. In addition, it produces much more renewable energy than it needs itself, allowing it to supply surrounding buildings with energy.
"We demonstrate in this project that the extremely high requirements of the Premium standard can be met with the right materials. For example, high-quality, properly installed windows provide more solar gains than heat losses. For this project, the profiles had to have a U-value lower than 0.8 W/m²K, the glass lower than 0.6 W/m²K. The building partners decided to install the window frames on our SoudaFrame SWI system," explains Karolien Van Raemdonck, product manager - coatings & SWS at Soudal.
"This is an intelligent pre-frame system made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) with low thermal conductivity for installation of exterior joinery. The frame is screwed directly into the frame, eliminating the need for a metal connection between window frame and load-bearing wall construction, thus eliminating thermal bridges. The tailor-made frame and uniform joint dimensions allow for qualitative installation and perfect sealing with, for example, Flexifoam (X-tra) and Soudatight SP, both SWS solutions that passed airtightness tests with flying colors at the ift Rosenheim."
These products from Soudal are thus high-quality solutions for "air-controlled" sealing of the building envelope. Soudatight SP is a sprayable liquid solution that once dry forms a seamless, elastic, airtight and vapor control membrane. The elastic PU foam Flexifoam, called "the blue foam" among professionals, was developed more than 10 years ago and is still one of the top products on the market today.
"We recently launched a new generation of this product, specifically Flexifoam X-tra (Click & Fix®). The high elasticity was already a key feature of the original product, but this new version is even more elastic and can therefore cope even better with joint movements in two directions, both during compression (compression) and stretching (decompression). This product also immediately contributes to a high-quality thermal, acoustic and durable seal, without thermal bridges, that is maintained for many years. It also has a positive impact on the airtightness and energy efficiency of the building," explains Van Raemdonck.
"Moreover, with Flexifoam X-tra 30% we guarantee more yield, in other words with the same volume of product the processor can fill more meters of joints. For added user-friendliness and optimal, fast operation, this innovation is equipped with the patented Click & Fix®-system. With a quarter turn, the canister is secured in the gun adapter, and the easy spray-out capability does away with PU foam spills. So at Soudal we are not resting on our laurels and we want to be one step ahead of the competition again and again."
