Building requirements are changing rapidly. Energy performance standards are becoming stricter, comfort expectations are rising, and the bar is being set higher and higher in terms of safety and ease of use as well. “These developments have a direct impact on how window frames and facade elements are designed and constructed,” says Joska Hissink of SIEGENIA. In this article, he explains why an integrated approach is necessary in this case.
“Whereas components used to be approached separately, the focus is increasingly shifting toward the overall performance of an element,” notes Hissink. “Ventilation, sealing technology, and ease of use are inextricably linked in this context. Integrating ventilation into the window frame or facade makes it possible to ventilate in a controlled manner without compromising insulation or ease of use.” Hissink also sees a clear trend in the field of locking technology. “Multi-point locking systems have now become the standard, with a focus not only on burglary resistance but also on ease of operation and long-term reliability. Especially in applications where safety has a broader meaning—such as in non-residential construction—aspects like escape routes and intuitive operation also play an important role. Solutions that combine technology and ease of use contribute to a sustainable and safe end result.”
What is becoming increasingly important in practice is the extent to which these systems not only function well individually but are also coordinated with one another. “A well-sealed element, combined with controlled ventilation, ensures a stable and comfortable indoor climate, while at the same time meeting the established energy and safety requirements,” says Hissink. “In addition to technical performance, economic considerations naturally also play a role in the choices that are made. In this regard, the focus is increasingly shifting from the initial investment to performance over the entire lifespan. Factors such as maintenance, ease of use, and reliability are having an ever-greater influence on the total value of a solution.”
“This development calls for a broader perspective on components and systems,” concludes Hissink. “Not as separate parts, but as essential building blocks of a well-functioning whole. By considering the interplay between ventilation, window and door systems, and comfort at an early stage, we can create solutions that not only meet today’s needs but will continue to perform well in the long term.” In a market that is constantly changing, an integrated approach provides a solid foundation. “It forms the basis for future-proof window frame solutions in which comfort, safety, and indoor climate are in balance.”
