GGD Gelderland-Zuid is the winner of the Reynaers Project Award 2025. The project by architecture firm De Twee Snoeken received no less than 38% of the public votes. The professional jury of the architecture prize chose four finalists from all the entries, who competed against each other. A brief anthology of the projects.
A safe place where aesthetics, technology and humanity come together. That was to be the new GGD Gelderland-Zuid health center in Nijmegen. With a limited budget, architect Joost Roefs of De Twee Snoeken gave the design the necessary symbolism. A special choice, for example, was to place the window frames not in, but on the facade: a so-called flower frame.
An important aesthetic and technical element of the building are the aluminum window frames. In consultation with facade builder Haro Aluminium, Roefs and his team chose a combination of Reynaers Aluminium systems: SlimLine 38 and MasterLine 8. Each system was chosen based on function, appearance and technical performance. “The SlimLine 38 is our favorite because of its slender profile and refined detailing. The thin lines give the façade an elegant look and enhance the rhythmic play of patterns we applied to the façade.” MasterLine 8 was used for the sliding doors. “This combination gave us the freedom to work aesthetically without compromising on technical performance such as air tightness, water tightness and insulation.”
From forgotten urban corner to non-conformist residential building. With a plinth of warm red brick and tiled roofs and a superstructure of zinc-colored bright panels and steel, you can't ignore Wolstad in Tilburg's Piushaven. Architect Walter van der Hamsvoord of DAT Architects designed a building that nods to its industrial history, but at the same time is ready for the future. The design was technically complex. After all, totally different systems were used. The cooperation with contractor Heerkens van Bavel Bouw and facade builder Van Hoesel Aluminium was therefore essential.
One of the most exciting moments was in the connection between the cladding and window openings. Van der Hamsvoord chose steel U-profiles to frame the balconies and large window openings. The window frames are inconspicuous, but defining. “The profiles had to be anchored to the supporting structure, but also have a watertight finish before the façade closed. A solution to this was found in Reynaers Aluminum's dimensionally stable aluminum window frames, which had to fit precisely to the millimeter, combined with manually placed steel structures and a façade built up in layers. The window frames let the glass and views speak for themselves. From floor to ceiling you look diagonally across the water.”
Linked brick volumes, subtly concealed window frames and Brazilian brickwork. Villa BW contrasts and flirts with the classical architecture on the Bredaseweg in Tilburg. Architect Jaap Bekkers of Grosfeld Bekkers van der Velde Architects created a contemporary design based on the idea of the 1930s house. Thanks to the use of dark red brickwork, the villa fits in with the original buildings, while the lack of a roof and the abstract facade composition give it a contemporary twist.
The detailing of facades, eaves and sliding doors required close cooperation between architect, contractor and facade builder Wijnveen Aluminiumbouw. The choice of aluminum systems from Reynaers Aluminium was deliberate. “By detailing the window frames completely away behind the brickwork, we were able to reinforce the composition. Placing the effect from the inside ensures that the glass is deep in the facade. This creates an image that is quite unusual in the Netherlands: the glass is, as it were, framed by masonry rather than by profile. It does mean that as an architect you have to think about logistics and detailing at an early stage.”
From a closed, smeared factory hall to a modern office building: the Hurkse Bogen gives Eindhoven's dormant De Hurk business park a new look. Architect Niels Olivier of Niels Olivier Architects trimmed some of the original volume and got more transparency and authenticity in return. By literally cutting strips out of the volume, patios were created that bring light, air and greenery into the hall and make the special roof structure visible.
“We always look for the original grid - horizontal, vertical - that is present in many Philips buildings. We refill that grid with contemporary materials, while staying true to the formal language of the industrial heritage.” At the Hurkse Bogen, this led to a subtle play between old concrete structures and new aluminum facades from Reynaers Aluminium. In consultation with facade builder V.P.G. Aluminium Windows and Facade Engineering, SlimLine 38 and ConceptWall 50 were chosen because of their slim profiles and industrial look. “Steel window frames used to be common. These new window frames are the closest in terms of visual language, but with all the advantages of modern aluminum.”
