‘We want to broaden and strengthen the VMRG Hallmark’
At the VMRG General Assembly on Feb. 2, 2026, Igor La Vos was officially appointed the VMRG's new chairman. Outgoing chairman Joseph Kuling sealed this moment by handing over the gavel to La Vos.
With his extensive experience in commercial leadership, transition programs and governance within the construction and manufacturing industry, La Vos joins to further set the association's course. We spoke to La Vos for a closer introduction and to hear about VMRG's ambitions.
“The VMRG has a clear strategy for the future,” is La Vos“ first impression. ”For years, the VMRG Quality Requirements and Advice have provided guidance for many architects, clients, consultants and contractors in the construction industry as to what a quality metal façade must meet. VMRG member companies meet these high requirements, are tested on them and can prove this with the VMRG Quality Mark. Choosing a VMRG Hallmark company means choosing guaranteed quality."
“We tighten the requirements for the VMRG Hallmark every year,” La Vos explains. “The VMRG member companies show daily that they want to meet the highest standard, which is how we distinguish ourselves. We believe that quality goes beyond technical requirements. And that's why we want to broaden and strengthen the VMRG Hallmark. For us, quality also means working safely. Accidents still happen every year in factories and on construction sites. Fortunately, many initiatives have already been taken to work more safely. As an industry organization, we embrace safety and encourage and facilitate companies to work safely. We do this by linking safety requirements to the VMRG Hallmark.”

“As of July 1, 2026, Step 3 on the Safety Culture Ladder (SCL) is mandatory for companies participating in ViA (Safety in Tendering) tenders in the construction and infrastructure sector,” La Vos continued. “This obligation, stems from the Governance Code Safety in Construction (GCVB). Many of our larger members have already achieved this Step 3 and many other companies are already working on safety. We are going to ask our companies to make safety demonstrable by achieving rungs on the Safety Ladder. For medium-sized and smaller companies there is a phased introduction, with sufficient time and guidance to grow in this area. After all, satisfying a rung on the safety ladder demands quite a lot from a company. It requires involvement at all levels in the organization to, making safety a shared responsibility and creating a true safety culture.”
La Vos: “From the VMRG we guide this process by, for example, sharing knowledge in meetings. But we have also trained people internally to advise companies during this process. A VMRG Community Safety has also been established. This consists of some 15 member companies. They help think about how to improve the safety culture throughout the entire facade construction process, from production to assembly. We share experiences, discuss (near) accidents and jointly develop improvement measures. Companies are also required to report accidents to the VMRG. By registering and analyzing accidents centrally, we can make targeted policy as an industry, for example to prevent common risks. This way we learn from each other.”
La Vos indicates that not only safety will be part of the VMRG Hallmark, but the ambition goes further, namely also in the field of sustainability. “Aluminum and steel are durable materials with a very long lifespan. Products can be reused and all the aluminum and steel from a facade can be recycled and this is already happening with almost all facade metal. What is unique about these materials is that they can be infinitely recycled without loss of quality. For years the VMRG has invested in research in the field of sustainability and the VMRG was one of the initiators of the Circular Facade Economy. Together with other industry organizations, we are committed to making what was once a window, frame, door or curtain wall part of a facade again in a subsequent cycle and to minimize CO2 emissions during this cycle. Together, we as producers are taking our responsibility and we are also going to make that part of the hallmark. Soon a new NTA (Nederlandse Technische Afspraak, a type of standards document issued by NEN) for Circular Facades will be published, an initiative of the Circular Facade Economy. VMRG companies are also involved in the development of this NTA. Criteria from this NTA we want to make part of the VMRG Hallmark.”
“What inspires me most is the power of collaboration,” La Vos concludes. “Whether member or partner companies, suppliers or other stakeholders, together we get further. We encourage all parties to take a more active role and invest in clear communication and a strong positioning of aluminum and steel as a sustainable material choice. I invite everyone in the (facade) construction chain to set course together.”
