Attention to natural ventilation in unique project EDGE Amsterdam West

EDGE Amsterdam West is an iconic project and an absolute eye-catcher in the landscape of Amsterdam. The 54,000m2 building with an office area of 42,000m2 was redeveloped by EDGE with the highest ambitions in terms of usability, sustainability and health. EDGE pays close attention to air quality by focusing on ample ventilation and incoming air. To this end, the company partnered with ventilation specialist DUCO Ventilation & Sun Control.

Intensive ventilation in atrium roof

In the renovation of Edge Amsterdam West an atrium roof was created in the form of a dome structure with a pattern related to the design of the existing building. The dome spans 76 m and consists of an octagonal main structure forming a grid of triangles with radials. This is the second largest glass dome in Europe.

Within this structure, 40 DucoGrille NightVents fitted for the supply of fresh air. This ventilation hatch ventilates based on need and can be perfectly used to cool the entire interior space by using large flows of fresh outside air. When everything is open at the same time, we can ventilate 106,000 m3/h. A normal residential house needs about 260 m3/h to ventilate. So this is quite a lot of residential houses then.

Self-regulating, noise-reducing ventilation grille

DucoMax Largo ZR grilles were installed invisibly - compact calf placement - and provide the office spaces with fresh air. DucoMax Largo ZR is a self-regulating, noise-reducing ventilation grille, specifically developed for situations where there are heavy noise levels (attenuation up to 48 dB). Absolutely necessary in a complex such as EDGE Amsterdam so that people are not bothered by the atrium noise. Here the DucoMax Largo White was used with a total length of 347 meters.

Water resistant louvre gratings

On the outside of the building were DucoGrille Classic 130HP (Class-A) water resistant louvre grilles are used. The DucoGrille Classic G 130HP is a recessed wall grille and was specially developed for intensive ventilation thanks to their low resistance factor. The uniquely shaped aerodynamic 'High Performance' blade provides a combination of very good air passage (large flow rates) together with excellent water resistance (Class A). The uniquely shaped aerodynamic 'High Performance' lamella provides a combination of very good air passage (large flows) together with excellent water resistance (Class A). On the inside, we chose our DucoGrille NightVents that control based on need.

Edge's plan to provide optimal air quality within the complex was thus absolutely successful. By focusing on natural, intensive ventilation with additional filtering of incoming air, this project can safely be called a paragon of energy efficiency and sustainability. Everyone inside the building can thus enjoy a pleasant and healthy indoor/outdoor climate.
