SIEGENIA, an international player in the world of frame and hardware solutions, attaches great importance to connecting with customers. To this end, the company enters into close collaborations with partners and customers. With innovative systems, SIEGENIA brings spaces to life. Out of the long-term relationships also come great developments, such as the KanBan system. This efficient and sustainable Grab-Never-Miss stock system was developed by BeterGevel, Burghouwt and SIEGENIA and offers each party many advantages.
The KanBan system is sustainable in many ways. The three partners sought a solution in inventory management. The new way of working allows them to process a higher volume, with shorter lead times. KanBan is a self-supporting system where you never miss out. Minimal stocks and optimal purchasing efficiency are key.
The KanBan system is applied per item, perfectly matched to the racking. The bin contains the same product at all times, with always the same quantity. This eliminates the need for entry control and ensures that planning is not affected at crucial times. The bin is scanned, placed in the racks and the products are ready for grabbing. Deviations do not occur, allowing you to always keep the same stocks.
The product range has been fine-tuned in recent years so that 80% of the items fit perfectly within the system. Together, the three parties looked at the "runners-up" and how best to produce them, for optimal efficiency in the KanBan system and so that you never miss out. A Plan of Action was drawn up on the basis of volumes and dimensions, among other things. Then the system was made completely closed: as soon as a bin is empty, it is immediately replenished. Moreover, by incorporating a grab and reserve stock, there is always a buffer before a new bin arrives.
"The system provides better insight into the off-take of certain items and gives a very reliable forecast. As a result, we are not affected by the material shortage that prevails within the market. This gives our reliability an extra boost," said Erwin Wiggers, director of BeterGevel.
In addition to its high efficiency, the KanBan system has several other major advantages. "Being able to deliver packaging-free has exceeded expectations. Not only does BeterGevel achieve time savings at the time of production, because the products are stripped of their packaging beforehand we also contribute to the sustainability ambitions. For example, because the packaging material is neatly separated and recycled at the moment there is time for it," said Robert Bosman, account manager at Burghouwt. "Moreover, it ensures a more streamlined production process at BeterGevel, because there is no more waste material floating around in production and the focus is placed on the core work."
Another important development is that transport has been reduced from 5 or 6 times a week to 2 or 3 times a week. This not only affects the number of transport movements, but also makes just-in-time deliveries and agreements with customers easier to implement. Moreover, warehousing - looking at loading and unloading schedules - has become much more practical.
Bosman: "This process is only feasible because of the trust that BeterGevel expresses to Burghouwt. The organization dares to commit to one supplier and gives an honest long-term forecast of what it will produce. As a result, we know exactly where we stand, which leads to a perfectly tuned cooperation. Even in more difficult times, the sharp inventory management ensures that we have no or less trouble with shortages."
The three partners together have many years of experience in the industry and a solid position in the market. Yet the KanBan system provides an even better foundation. The KanBan system is a wonderful development where the customer never misses out again. The system thus contributes to an even higher service orientation, which only strengthens the position.
