More wood in construction: a logical step

Almost thirty frontrunners from the construction and wood sectors have signed the Building & Wood Covenant since 2012, and they did so with a clear goal: certified wood must become a matter of course. The results are impressive: all participants are buying at least 90% certified wood by 2019. Therefore, this year it was decided to set a new goal: to use more wood in construction projects.

10% more wood

The objective of the Building & Wood Covenant is derived from FSC Netherlands' strategy to use 10% more wood in construction over the next five years. Obviously, this involves certified wood, sourced from well-managed forests. If this is the case, then wood is one of the most environmentally friendly building materials, and also inherently circular.

Natural raw material

TBI Holding has been a participant in the covenant from the very beginning. Wendeline Besier, Manager CSR, explains how they are working on the objective of using more wood. She sees lots of starting points: "The revised covenant is a good reflection of the current 'state' of wood in construction. Almost all the wood used today is sustainably certified, but there are still plenty of opportunities to use more wood. By signing this revised covenant, we as TBI endorse the importance of certified wood as a circular building material. After all, it is a natural raw material, saves CO₂ up and is easily reusable."

Concrete projects

TBI is already giving concrete form to its ambition to build more projects with wood. Examples include the Triodos Bank office in Driebergen-Zeist, completed this year, and the 'HAUT' residential tower in Amsterdam, which consists largely of wood. Wood also plays a central role in the development of our circular concept home (TBI WOONlab).
