LESS MAINTENANCE, LOT OF GLASS

LOW MAINTENANCE, LOTS OF GLASS

A dream home in the middle of nature

Jeanet Poffers and Ivan Rudde recently had a modern barn home built "on the most beautiful spot in Nijverdal. We are talking about a dream house with lots of space and lots of light. Architect Marcel Schuurman of MadMax Diesajn designed the home, together with the proud residents. "We still say every week: how wonderful that we are allowed and able to live here!"

After buying a lot, Jeanet and Ivan made a sketch of the desired layout. "With our sketch we went to Marcel. He made some plans and that's where this house rolled out."

Modern barn house

Marcel Schuurman previously designed a house for Ivan's brother and was now allowed to work for Jeanet and Ivan. Marcel: "The result is a modern version of the barn house in terms of materials and finish. Basically a simple floor plan with a large roof with large overhangs. We added some accents in the facade by placing oak trusses."

Marcel always designs in close consultation with clients. "We stay as close as possible to their wishes. That's mainly a matter of listening carefully." For example, the bricks and roof tiles the residents had selected themselves at Steenhandel Twenthe in Rijssen, where Jeanet works.

Jeanet: "We chose an exclusive braised stone developed by Steenhandel Twenthe itself. Our home is the first time this stone has been used. We chose flat roof tiles to go with it."

Downstairs, the house has everything you need: living area, kitchen and a bedroom with attached bathroom. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and a large bathroom. And above that is a spacious attic. Ivan: "So this house can also accommodate a large family; that's handy if we ever want to sell the house."

The large glass windows give the home a special and unique character.

Wide view of nature

The large expanses of glass give the home its special character. Ivan: "It is an open, light house. The back, the end wall, is all glass from top to bottom. Even the living kitchen has glass on all sides. We look outside everywhere." There's a lot to see there. "We have the outer lot, at the back. That's a piece of nature reserve, where the Regge runs along. And in front of us we have forest. We are in the most beautiful place in Nijverdal!"

Of course, residents don't just enjoy all that beauty behind the glass. "We sit outside on the garden terrace a lot. If there's a bit more wind or if it's a bit later in the afternoon, we can move to the roof terrace. Behind the glass balustrade you sit out of the wind and look away nicely."

Durable and low maintenance

The house has solar panels and the facade, roof and window frames are very well insulated. Marcel: "That, of course, already provides profit. In addition, maintenance-friendly materials have been chosen. So no wooden window frames." With a wink, Marcel adds, "Painting is not really their favorite hobby, shall I say."

Ivan: "Maintenance-free was important to us. That's why the buoys and gutter cladding are made of powder-coated aluminum. At first we also wanted aluminum window frames, but they were so expensive. Plastic window frames are a good alternative. Inside and outside we wanted a special color. Our choice fell on plastic window frames with the VEKA profile system SOFTLINE 82 NL, finished with VEKA SPECTRAL matte black."

The window frames were supplied by Kunststof Kozijnen Vroomshoop. The house was built by Potgieter KVO Bouw in Diffelen.

Finding boundaries

Marcel was born and raised in Hellendoorn and has been active in the region for about twenty years. "I hear from people that they recognize what I do. My work always deviates slightly from the standard. The satisfaction is in seeking out boundaries in terms of regulations and technical possibilities. In addition, I occasionally try to stretch the client's boundaries so that they also get off the beaten path." That wasn't necessary with Jeanet and Ivan, by the way. "They were already open to new ideas."

Not standard either is the name of his agency: MadMax Diesajn. "I don't look like Mel Gibson, but as an avid motorcyclist, in my rambunctious youth I sometimes went on a more vigorous rampage than the law requires of us. And yes, then you get a nickname and I chose that for my agency." Marcel looks back on this project with a good feeling. "In consultation with the clients, we built a home that is now truly their home."
