Energy-efficient construction at more than 2,000 m elevation

Heat-insulating window and door systems from heroal for the Berghotel Rudolfshütte

At an altitude of 2,315 m, accessible only by cable car, the Berghotel Rudolfshütte offers its guests an extraordinary vacation experience on the shore of Lake Weißsee. The traditional hotel in Austria's Hohe Tauern National Park attracts alpinists, skiers and nature lovers. Now the owners have answered the growing demand with a new extension, whose architecture is beautifully integrated into the landscape. Window and door systems from heroal provide an unobstructed view of the mountain peaks and, with their optimal density, ensure energy efficiency and cosiness even in strong winds.

As one of the first shelters in the Hohe Tauern, today's Berghotel Rudolfshütte in Salzburg County can look back on an eventful history. It begins in 1874 and went through several extensions with finally the construction of a new hotel in 1959. Since then, numerous illustrious personalities have been guests, from Dutch Princess Irene to Austrian ski legend Toni Sailer. The hotel owes its current size and popularity to Dr. Wilfried Holleis, who together with his family took over in 2004 and restored the hotel to its original name, after Crown Prince Rudolf, son of the then Emperor Franz Joseph I. In the following years, the owner family invested several times in the attractiveness of this extraordinary hotel, which is one of the ten highest located hotels in Austria and has its own ski area.

These measures also include the new extension, realized with an eye for nature conservation, which increases the number of rooms and creates additional recreational areas. The aesthetic architecture takes into account the design concept of the main building, fitting harmoniously into the surrounding mountain landscape. Due to the location of the building, the structural planning and realization were complex: the high wind speeds imposed very high requirements in terms of density and thermal insulation. The fact that the hotel is heated exclusively with electricity, which is due to the extreme height of the building, made energy efficiency an extra important aspect.

Reliable execution through careful planning

To ensure that no cold mountain air can enter through the building envelope, the windows and doors were planned with great care. For the realization, the owner family called on Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH, a nationally active building materials dealer, which has supplied heroal window and door systems to the family for many years, to its complete satisfaction. The heroal specialist alu-one Metallbaupartner GmbH, which has extensive experience in the construction of aluminum windows, doors and glass facades, was commissioned to produce the elements. Working closely together, the two companies consulted all technical aspects at an early stage in order to select heroal window and door systems that optimally meet the high requirements for energy efficiency and tightness, even at wind speeds of over 180 km/h.

The heroal project service provided additional planning security by working out the technically flawless, most durable and most economical solution for the construction project taking into account all project-specific requirements. Using a static calculation, the heroal project service provided the required tightness of the window and door systems in the Berghotel Rudolfshütte. For engineer Ferdinand Reisenberger, proxy of alu-one Metallbaupartner GmbH, this measure proved its worth: "We were very satisfied with the technical help from the heroal project service. And with the subsequent project implementation, which went extremely well."

In harmony with the surrounding nature: heroal hwr powder coating in moss green

For the implementation, Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH chose the window system heroal W 72 and the door system heroal D 72. Some of the total 80 elements consist of multiple glass panels, combining maximum wind resistance with transparency for bright interior spaces. The color scheme reflects the aesthetic concept of the main building and shows a successful interplay of color accents with a harmonious adaptation to the natural tones of the mountain landscape. RAL 9016 m traffic white was chosen for the extruded aluminum systems on the inside of the building and RAL 6005 m moss green on the outside. Thanks to the in-house powder-coating plant, heroal can guarantee high surface quality, with the highly weather-resistant heroal hwr powder-coating ensuring that color shade stability, gloss retention and weather resistance are excellent for a very long time, and the various heroal systems are exactly the same color.

Window system heroal W 72 - aesthetically adapted to the mountain landscape

In the Berghotel Rudolfshütte, the windows of the heroal W 72 system offer the highest quality and maximum energy and cost efficiency thanks to the profile construction of half aluminum shells, polyamide insulation bridges and fully foam-filled insulation zone. Due to the unique geometry, the windows achieve Uw-values that meet today's thermal insulation requirements for windows. A solution with bevelled profiles was implemented for the upper floor of the three-story extension, which imitates the surroundings and blends stylishly into the mountainous landscape. The high thermal insulation is further optimized by the hardware heroal WF 100, which meets the highest requirements for tightness, ease of use and design. Thanks to the pre-assembled, clampable parts, the surface-mounted hardware can be installed quickly and easily and impresses with its smooth mobility thanks to the roller-bearing, convenient, mushroom-shaped locks.

Optimal thermal insulation with the heroal D 72 door system

The entrance door system heroal D 72 forms an equally aesthetic and functional solution in the Berghotel Rudolfshütte. The 72 mm construction depth of the frame profiles is identical to that of the window system heroal W 72 and thus ensures optimal combination possibilities with a homogeneous, attractive design. The tested and certified system is approved according to the applicable requirements of EN 179/1125 for use in escape and rescue routes of public buildings. Thanks to sealing technology with modular construction and the innovative geometry of insulating bridges with reduced heat conduction from inside to outside, the door system heroal D 72 also achieves the best insulation values, contributing to the energy efficiency and value of the hotel. According to Josef Steiner, project manager at Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH, the cooperation with heroal on this project was a great success: "With the window and door systems from heroal, the high requirements of the client could be fully met. The fact that the heroal project service was already involved in the planning phase also proved to be a great advantage and contributed to the smooth implementation."
