New feature increases applicability

Concealed built-in door closer now also suitable for outward-swinging facade doors

It was already on display at BAU 2025 in Munich earlier this year; the new feature of the ITS 96, the virtually invisible flush-mounted door closer from dormakaba. As the strongest variant (the EN 3-6) is now equipped with a special BCA valve, the product can also be used in facade doors that turn outwards. Another invention presented in Germany concerns the ITS Home, a variant that significantly increases the ease of use of interior doors. Olav de Lavoir, business developer by industry on behalf of dormakaba, once again highlights both novelties.

An outward-swinging gable door with built-in door closer is now easy to handle, even in inclement weather.

As a total provider of innovative technologies and access solutions for smarter and safer buildings, spaces and premises, dormakaba operates in many sectors and environments. In utility construction, but also when it comes to tradi-tional residential construction. A good picture of the range is sketched in dormakaba's free-to-install interactive 360° City app, which shows almost the entire range in the form of a virtual city.

Among them is the ITS 96 flush-mounted door closer, a valued and frequently used solution for many years. The closer features dormakaba's patented heart-shaped shaft technology EASY OPEN, a concept that guarantees easy and effortless opening and closing of doors. The product is therefore very popular, including with architects and building owners who like to combine an attractive aesthetic product design with optimal self-closing of doors. "Moreover, thanks to its small dimensions, the ITS 96 is suitable for any door or frame," adds De Lavoir. "Regardless of whether wood, aluminum, steel or any other material is used for it."

Widely applicable

The ITS 96, available in EN 2-4 and EN 3-6 strength versions as well as various types, has a door width range of 1,400 millimeters. It can also be used for doors weighing up to 180 kilograms and for smoke and fire doors. In the latter case, the door must be tested together with the closer.

"Equipped with a clearance function, the opening resistance is virtually the same as that of a door without a door closer," continues De Lavoir. "This closer can be activated by means of a signal. Thus, the closing sequence regulator (GSR, ed.) controls the closing sequence of double doors to ensure complete closure of the doors. EMF, which freely translated stands for electromechanical hold-open device, ensures that doors remain open when free passage is desired. The doors can be closed manually or close automatically on power failure or via the fire alarm system in conjunction with smoke detectors."

Welcome novelties

In Munich last January, the benefits and features mentioned above received a welcome follow-up. De Lavoir explains. "By adding a so-called BCA valve, the strongest va-riant in the program, the EN 3-6, is now also suitable for use in outward-turning facade doors. With this additional feature, it is possible to adjust the opening speed of the door according to the principle of BCA, in full Backcheckadjust. A necessary function when, for example, users want to swing the door open or if the door opens in an unexpected gust of wind. BCA ensures that the door is slowed down in such situations. Application of a door buffer remains advised."

Concealed and therefore stylish: in use, the ITS 96 door closer is barely visible.

Another notable first at BAU 2025 involved the introduction of the new ITS Home, a version that significantly increases the ease of use of interior doors. "With ITS Home, opening a door takes as much force as a door without this feature," said De Lavoir. "The door closes softly, and even if the door is swung closed quickly, the braking action ensures that this is controlled and noiseless. A nice extra that not only increases user comfort, but also reduces possible damage, energy loss and noise pollution in buildings."
