Anniversary: 40 years of designing with color!

The days when plastic window frames were mostly white are far behind us. The popularity of these low-maintenance window frames is increasing unabated and with it the possibility of choosing them in a wide range of colors. In 2020, GEALAN will celebrate a great anniversary: that's because acrylcolor will be 40 years old. For four decades, the company has contributed to diversity in the facade image. Bas van den Eerenbeemt, system advisor at GEALAN: "Our acrylcolor colors are colorfast and RAL approved."

Innovative color process

Quality is paramount at GEALAN, which is reflected in the production process of the colored window frame profiles. Van den Eerenbeemt explains: "Our acrylcolor profiles receive their color through co-extrusion. The PVC base profile and the colored acrylic layer thus become inseparable. After co-extrusion has taken place, the profiles are post-treated for a closed surface structure and an attractive appearance of color. The outside of the frames is colored, the inside always white or cream. Those who want to work with color on the inside, however, can opt for an additional decor film."

A great contribution to sustainability

Acrylic is a very strong material, highly resistant to weathering. The outer layer in acrylcolor therefore protects the frame profiles well against weathering. "The acrylcolor layer is from 0.5 to 0.8 mm thick and thus thicker than any color layer in the market. For any scratches that occur, the material is thick enough to polish away the scratch. Add to that the fact that the hard acrylic surface is scratch resistant anyway and you understand that these frames are among the most durable and resistant building elements, perfect for the emerging precast market."

Convincing features

In the context of sustainability, what about recycling? Van den Eerenbeemt explains: "Acrylcolor window frames can be recycled just like other plastic window frames without any problems. Looking a little further with sustainability in mind, we can say that acrylcolor window frames are color-stable, so they are less likely to be replaced, or require post-treatment to restore the color. Cleaning is child's play, as the acrylic top layer remains beautiful and impervious to dirt. This in turn saves detergent in the environment. Tests have shown that even after 10 years of use in all weathers, the acrylcolor layer is still beautifully smooth and shows almost no signs of wear."
