Their newly built home blends in well with the landscape. "The house is fairly modern, rural. With a thatched roof, a white top and a black bottom, the blemish edge." The choices made for it were mostly based on strict local regulations. "Only those regulations were not there for the window frames. So that's where we were able to make a difference."
The beautiful plastic window frames were made by Ekkel & Ekkel of Nijverdal. "We have a lot of glass, large areas. We think the doors turned out best. At Ekkel & Ekkel they put an aluminum plate in front of the plastic VEKA profiles, which looks very much like wood." Front, back, left and right: you see glass everywhere. "At the front, the large window frames are connected. In front of the void, which is sloping, a frame of about six meters was made. On the sides are fixed facades, which meet in a point and go over the floor." You don't see that floor, by the way. "Ekkel & Ekkel made a panel for that from the same material as the window frame film."
About Ekkel & Ekkel, Christian is full of praise. "We had a design done by a draftsman beforehand, but what it was going to look like in the end, with those big glass windows, is something that Edwoud Ekkel came up with anyway. He made an important contribution to the final result. There are things in there that we couldn't have thought of ourselves."
One of the smart tips Christian received can be seen when you open the door. "We have dark, almost black window frames. We chose the ultra-matte VEKA Spectral profile in RAL 7016. You can see that chic character on the inside of the window frames. That has no other color, as often happens, but is also black."
The window frames were not installed until the very last minute because the large profiles are quite fragile. "That installation was a lot of work. They had to install the higher glazing with cranes. Then, of course, they had to be finished."
It has become a sustainable home. For example, there are solar panels on the roof and the window frames have triple glazing. "Ekkel & Ekkel made self-regulating ventilation grilles in them, which were sprayed in the same color as the window frames. The disadvantages I initially saw in plastic turned out not to exist. It is all very comfortable. We now have a wonderful living environment."
A little tense, Christian found the idea of finishing everything dark inside as well. "But it worked out well. It contrasts nicely with the rest of the house. We painted the inside ourselves and I'm glad in retrospect that the outside frames didn't need to be painted!"
Christian has lived there since the summer of 2019.
