Boon Edam introduces updated security revolving doors that meet new standard EN 17352

Royal Boon Edam International is introducing an updated range of Tourlock high security security swing doors for access control with immediate effect. Both models comply with the new European standard EN 17352 which deals with user safety of electrically operated pedestrian access control devices.

Optimal balance between high security and user safety

Since April 2013, Boon Edam's architectural revolving doors have met the EN 16005 standard for user safety of automatic doors. In the years since, the company has worked hard to integrate those same safety standards and requirements into security revolving doors, so that those doors, too, provide this essential safety. The EN 17352 standard covers electrically powered pedestrian access control devices used for normal access and escape routes.

The Tourlock 180 and 120 security doors now comply with European standard EN 17352. These doors have been updated and now include even more advanced safety features to improve ease of use when operating the doors. The innovations that provide increased user safety include safety buffers, safety sensors and software. In the process, the high-quality security through anti-tailgating and anti-piggybacking functions is maintained, making the security swing doors an optimal balance between high security and user safety.

Increased need for a harmonized security standard due to growing trends

The need for a harmonized security standard has increased because of a number of growing global trends. Experts predict that with urbanization, half the world's population will live in or around cities, leading to crowded cities and a greater number of public access points. An increase in the number of people will inevitably lead to an increase in crime and security risks.

In addition, 1 in 5 people will need physical assistance due to aging. These people are less aware of hazards, less able to avert danger and at greater risk of injury. These factors have created a need within the industry for a standardized level of security for automatic pedestrian doors. In addition, we are increasingly seeing security access being integrated into the main entrance of the building, as part of the façade, rather than being confined to a deeper layer within the building, as was previously the case. This has a knock-on effect on children and other inexperienced users who need to be able to use the security access safely.

In addition, with the current developments surrounding the corona pandemic, companies are increasingly asking who is allowed to be in a building or specific area at what time and for what reason.

Dirk Groot, as Product Manager responsible for the security revolving door product portfolio, says: "This new safety standard is an excellent reference point for the industry to specify security products for a much broader scope. No matter whether the users are experienced or inexperienced or whether they are professionals, children or the elderly and disabled, they can all operate and use the door safely.

Upgrades and modernization of existing security doors

The new regulations also mean additional responsibilities for the owner or operator of already installed security revolving doors. The safety of security door users is just as important as the level of security the door provides. Tourlock models already installed over the years can easily be upgraded to meet the EN 17352 standard.

We have developed a scalable safety package that can be adapted to different needs, ranging from additional safety buffers to sensors that reduce rotational speed and even an emergency stop button, to avert all risks", continued Dirk.
