'Hardcore aluminum. It's a term that keeps coming up in the campaign for aluminum in facades. Its purpose is to boost the image of aluminum. The campaign makes it clear why aluminum is a good choice from a certain theme. The campaign is an initiative of the VMRG.
Aluminum plays an important role in sustainable facade construction. Because of the 75-year lifespan of aluminum windows and frames and the ability to be disassembled, reuse of an existing window or frame is a possibility that is already commonly used. Maintenance is virtually nonexistent, so the environmental impact over its lifetime is minimal. And aluminum does not release harmful substances, so it is safe for the building user.
At the end of its useful life, aluminum can be recycled without losing quality. This process can be repeated indefinitely and costs only 5% of the energy of producing aluminum from bauxite. So this results in a huge CO2 reduction. New aluminum facades already consist of an average of 55% of recycled aluminum and 95% of facade aluminum is already recycled after use.
Aluminum has a very long lifespan. It is long-term corrosion and UV resistant, so that virtually no maintenance is required during its lifetime. This means that there are hardly any replacement or maintenance costs during its lifetime. And, at the end of its service life, aluminum is again the raw material for a new facade, so it retains its value.
Aluminum is a light and strong material, which benefits creativity. In the extrusion process, an aluminum billet (a round bar of aluminum) is heated and pressed through a mold, called a die. This gives it the desired shape, and the material offers almost limitless possibilities for design
of facade components.
Affordable moulds also make freedom of form financially feasible and make special facades with attractive architecture possible. Aluminum facades have a long lifespan, virtually no maintenance costs, and because aluminum can be infinitely recycled without loss of quality, the material retains its value. Aluminum is fireproof and has the right properties to make products burglary-resistant, so less risk.
Surface treatment allows aluminum to take on a variety of colors and effects. The light and strong material allows for very slim frames with large glass surfaces, thus ensuring high daylight penetration. The appearance of a curtain wall can be completely changed during its service life by exchanging the covers.
