A panic lock contributes substantially to the safety of a building. It is important to make the right choice in panic locks as they must function under all conditions. Moreover, a malfunctioning panic lock can provide access to the building to uninvited guests. With more than 150 years of experience in the field of locks, dormakaba has an exquisite collection of panic locks. The range has even had an upgrade; all SVP locks now bear the 'Next Generation' name. We speak with Geoffrey van den Berg, account manager at dormakaba Netherlands, about the collection and its features.
"We distinguish panic locks into three categories," Geoffrey opens the conversation. "First, the mechanical panic locks, then the electric, crank-operated panic locks and finally the fully motorized panic locks. With this last category, there are numerous possible extensions, about which more information later."
Within the group of purely mechanical panic locks are the SVP5000 series and the SVP 4000 series. "The SVP 4000 series features signaling contacts for recognition of door status," Geoffrey explains. The SVP 6000 series falls within the category of self-locking handle-operated panic locks, with a single-sided solenoid. Geoffrey: "The automatic ejection of the deadbolt is 20 mm, which ensures an insurance-approved lock. Thanks to the cross latch, a two-point locking is achieved for improved security. At the same time, the anti-panic function ensures that the door can always be opened in the escape direction via the door handle. Mechanical opening from the outside remains possible by operating the cylinder with a key."
The expansion possibilities offered by the fully motorized panic locks are numerous. "Especially in combination with the ED100/250 door operators, because of the DCW connection (DCW=dormakaba connect & work) present, which literally works 'plug & play.' Power supply and control are provided by the automat. If required, the circuit breaker can be connected to the BMS (building management system) and the BMI (fire alarm system)," says Geoffrey.
The 'Next Generation' SVP locks have gained a number of important features. For example, the locks with a 235 x 24 mm faceplate have an SKG** quality mark and all locks have an anti-smoking function. The SVP2000 locks have an 'F' version with built-in Power Reserve module, especially for smoke and fire doors. "The SVP2000 'speaks' three languages. It can be used stand alone, or via a CAN bus system, or with our DCW bus system. The latter, as explained, can be perfectly combined with the ED100/250 door operators."
With the amount of types and options, one can imagine that choosing the right lock can sometimes be difficult. For that too, dormakaba has a charming and very welcome solution: the SVP tool online.
"With this online help, finding the right lock becomes child's play. By clicking one step further and further, the right lock comes out of the digital funnel at the bottom. With this, most questions can be answered. Anyone who still has doubts or can't figure it out is welcome to call or email us, of course," Geoffrey concludes. "Those who want to get started with the SVP tool right away, just scan the QR code on this page with their smartphone."
