The world's tallest 20-story wood and aluminum building is emerging in northern Sweden. Designed by architects from the White Arkitekter firm, the building includes a concert hall, spa and hotel. It is a textbook example of the concept of "green building. The Sara cultural center in Skellefteå is equipped with ALUPROF's most advanced aluminum system and will open in summer 2021.
The building, construction of which began in the fall of 2018, is intended to become the symbol and landmark of this part of the country. The cultural center is named after Sweden's top writer Sara Lidman who hails from this region. The creators were inspired by the idea of creating an object where culture and relaxation meet. Inspirational meetings, exhibitions, concerts, spectacles and banquets will take place here, among other things. Sara Kulturhus will be a dynamic space for residents of the city and guests from all over Sweden and abroad.
The property consists of two parts: a low four-story section with six conference and entertainment rooms for more than 3,200 people and an 80-meter-high tower with 250 luxury hotel rooms, a restaurant with panoramic views and a spa.
The goal of the companies cooperating in this project is to create an environmentally friendly and energy efficient building. The building will be built mainly with wood, aluminum and glass and is in line with Skellefteå Municipality's strategy of building with wood. The Scandinavian tradition of building with wood comes together here with the latest technical solutions, making the investment a paragon of sustainable design and green building.
The lower part of the building, which houses the cultural center, is made of prefabricated wood reinforced with concrete slabs that distribute the weight of the tower. The glazing is done in ALUPROF's MB-SR50N HI+ system, which was specially adapted for this project.
- The façade in the lower part of the building is made in the system MB-SR50N HI+, which can be equipped with glass packages of up to 1100 kg, allowing a fantastic panoramic view to be achieved. In addition to its aesthetic qualities, the system guarantees durability and structural strength. The façade with struts and cross beams is insulated with polyethylene that provides a particularly good thermal (Uf from 0.59 W/m2K) and acoustic insulation as well as simplifying the installation of the facade. Furthermore, the system MB-SR50N HI+ has a certificate from the institute PHI Darmstadt of the highest class A+. It is therefore recommended in the construction of passive objects - says Piotr Mika, head of the technical support department of ALUPROF SA.
The hotel section, in turn, is composed of prefabricated, wooden room modules with panoramic glazing that reflects the sky vault. This makes the tower appear to float freely above the cultural center. The distinctive feature of the facade construction is the so-called double skin that increases the energy efficiency of the object. The facade of the cultural center consists of double glazing, which makes it appear to merge into its surroundings. The outer layer is based on ALUPROF's MB-SW55 system, which was specially designed for this project and obtained BVB environmental certification and the GOLD/BREEM SE rating. The interior triple glazing is made in the system MB-86 SI characterized by high profile strength and good thermal insulation (Uf from 0.92 W/m2K).
The Skellefteå Kulturhus design won the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards at the international real estate industry event held annually in Cannes. It was also a nominee for the World Architecture Festival 2018 and MIPIM Awards 2018 in the Best Futura Project category.
