De Kapertoren: a landmark for students and young starters in downtown Hasselt

In 2012, the competition design of the Kapertoren in the Limburg capital began. After an intensive 8-year collaboration between the public and private sectors, the unique tower is a reality. The project provides housing for students and young starters. It is part of a large ensemble of buildings where the slender building shapes the skyline of the city. Schüco's AWS 75 WF.SI+ window systems met the architectural needs seamlessly. The storey-high window facades give the tower a narrow and homogeneous appearance.

The Kapertoren is an impressive tower planned in the urban greenery of Hasselt's Kapermolenpark, within walking distance of the bustling center. Three pavilions accompany the Kapertoren in the park, providing student housing with supporting functions such as co-working spaces and offices. There is also an indoor and outdoor swimming pool on site.

Thus, architect and director at POLO Architects Jascha Rondou says, "A long and constructive collaboration between different parties produced this successful overall picture of facilities. It contributes to a unique residential concept in which the Kapertoren is the epitome of better and different urbanization of cities. The combination of the park and the campus, creates an ideal living atmosphere for students and young starters."

Added value of Schüco window systems

Schüco, an expert in aluminum systems for windows, doors and façade projects, presents the AWS 75 WF.SI+ window system with the Kapertoren. It meets the highest energy and architectural requirements with excellent thermal insulation and narrow view widths. It forms the basis for a wide range of applications in energy-efficient buildings. The window system features a range of opening types such as turn, tilt and turn windows. It thus offers the highest degree of planning and design flexibility when implementing energy-efficient, design-oriented buildings.

"It thereby highlights the slender architecture of the Kapertoren and accompanies the unique vistas, both of the park and of the city. The architecture, location and innovative concept make Hasselt's tallest residential tower the place to be for students and young starters. The window system offers the highest degree of planning and design flexibility when implementing energy-efficient, design-oriented buildings," said Geert Michels, general manager of Schüco.
