The advantages of shingles as a roofing material

Roofing. It comes in all shapes and sizes, but in the Netherlands we tend to choose the old familiar roof tile. This is mainly because we have many houses with sloping roofs and roof tiles are most suitable for this purpose. But what are the advantages of using tiles as roofing material?

Long lifespan

Roof tiles or roof tile sheets you buy for the long term. They have a very long life span and can last 30, 50 or even more years. This does mean that roof tiles are more expensive than other types of roofing, but other roofing materials do not last as long and need to be replaced sooner.

Low maintenance

Roof tiles do not require much maintenance. Sometimes it may require local repairs, such as in the case of leakage. But in general, roof tiles withstand poor weather conditions well.

Resistant to all weather conditions

This immediately brings us to the next plus point: no matter if it rains hard, blows, freezes or snows, roof tiles can withstand it. In addition, roof tiles do not deform or warp due to bad weather and have a very good waterproofing ability, so there is little chance of leaks. You may just need to give the roof tiles a good cleaning once in a while after many heavy rainstorms to make sure they look nice again and last even longer.

Sustainable choice

Roof tiles have a small effect on the climate, making it a sustainable choice. This is because the raw materials for roof tiles are plentiful and production requires very little energy.

The disadvantages

Of course, every advantage also has its disadvantage. But in the case of tiles as roofing material, the disadvantages outweigh all the advantages. The biggest disadvantage is the price of roofing tiles. It is higher than many other types of roofing, but then again, roof tiles have a long lifespan compared to the other types of roofing. Do you want your roof tiles to last even longer? Then make sure they are cleaned regularly. In addition, an extra layer of insulation material is needed under the roof tiles, since they themselves are not insulating. Finally, there is less choice in colors and materials than with PVC roofing, for example.
