'Proper connection of window frame to structural frame is essential'

Info afternoon on frame anchoring eye-opener for construction companies

HEBO Kozijnen and Gebr. Bodegraven have combined their knowledge in a new initiative: a training facility where everything revolves around the correct frame anchoring. To introduce the construction world to this Techniekplein, HEBO Kozijnen organized a number of introductory afternoons at its home base in Hengevelde, Twente. On Wednesday 17 April, the trade journal Profiel was also present.

Construction professionals from all corners of the country have come to HEBO Kozijnen's state-of-the-art experience center. After a joint lunch in the stylish restaurant, the group made its way to the HEBO theater where director Norbert Kuipers gave a short presentation on the history of the family business. The program also includes an extensive tour of the two factories of the plastic and wooden window frames. But what most of those present came for above all was the Technical Square: a practical area with some twenty-five window frame set-ups where customers can practice adjusting or adjusting window frames themselves.

Capture weight of frame

For the anchoring of window frames to the interior wall - whether of concrete, sand-lime brick, wood or another material - HEBO works closely with Gebr. Bodegraven, a specialist in connections for the construction industry. As soon as Michel Vernooij, technical advisor for Gebr. Bodegraven, starts his story at the Techniekplein, everyone present hangs on his every word.

"Always be aware of what you are doing, because glass is the heaviest element in your building component," he cautions. "What you also see is that glass is getting heavier and heavier, going further and further out. And the further out the glass goes, the longer and thicker your anchor has to get. So you have to pay very close attention to how you're going to accommodate the weight of a frame, not only in the frame itself, but also to the floor and the wall. In fact, most of today's construction problems are caused by improper frame anchoring."

Recognition

Michel Vernooij's clear practical explanation evoked much recognition among the construction professionals present. "When anchoring a window frame, people are quick to say: well, it will hold. While it is often better to use longer plugs," says Ron van Dijk, work planner at Van Wiggen Bouw from Vianen.

"But for ourselves, this afternoon is mainly a confirmation that we are already doing very well in many ways as well."

A workshop carpenter from Bouwgroep Huiskes in Tubbergen also found the explanation very enlightening: "When anchoring sliding doors, we sometimes have problems with the lower sill sagging slightly forward. But by attaching larger and heavier anchors - as was clearly demonstrated here - the lower sill stays neatly straight."

Construction professionals will be explained how to best accommodate the weight of a frame.

Chief foreman Marty Nijland of construction company Van Wijnen in Eibergen also finds the explanation very valuable: "When installing a window frame you quickly assume that it is all stable, but here you are made even more aware of how much force is actually being exerted on a window frame. In that respect, it is also good to hear that Gebr. Bodegraven can provide technical support and calculation modules for frame anchoring."

Owner Jeroen Exterkate of Bouwbedrijf Exterkate of Borne finds the explanation of the length of the anchors particularly enlightening. "Most anchors we use on the construction site are indeed rather short. So the advice to use longer anchors for frame anchoring is really of added value."

Few completion points

During the subsequent extensive tour of the beautiful showroom and the production sites for the plastic and wooden window frames, visitors feast their eyes. "Very interesting to see how the products you work with every day are made," says a window frame fitter from Velners Kozijnen en Timmerwerken from Enter. Director Eric Huiskes of Bouwgroep Huiskes, as a customer of HEBO since ten years, also says he does not regret coming to the information afternoon. "Where does it go wrong and where does it go right when anchoring a window frame to the structural frame? We got answers to those questions this afternoon. After all, our goal is to ensure that when we deliver our final product, we have as few completion points as possible. This afternoon certainly helped to make that even better."

Quality Assurance Act

It all sounds like music to HEBO director Norbert Kuipers' ears. According to him, his company also offers many starting points for giving hands and feet to the Quality Assurance Act. "With our prefabricated window frame concept, we are already optimally prepared for this law, which must demonstrate whether a contractor has done a job properly," he says. "So as far as quality assurance of window frames is concerned, contractors do not have to reinvent the wheel. In addition, we are also going to arrange that the method of frame anchoring is included in the KOMO certificate. As a result, for the concrete, wood and steel frame industries, the correct connection of a window frame to a construction frame will soon be well thought out. With this, we offer contractors a total solution."

Skilled frame partner

Project leader Marco Leunissen of Metrix Bouw of Herten, Limburg - specialized in steel frame construction - traveled all the way from the deep south to Twente. "During the Eigen Huis trade fair in Utrecht, I became acquainted with HEBO and was also invited to this information afternoon. Very interesting for our company, because we are looking for a competent frame partner you can build on," he says. "Incidentally, the anchoring of sliding doors and the proper adjustment of the lower lintel is also a tricky issue with steel frame construction. That is why it is interesting to further investigate what HEBO can do for us in this regard."
