Construction cylinders become permanent cylinders in a snap

Smart technology enables more sustainable and easier work with cylinders

Normally, construction cylinders are used during the construction phase once the doors are assembled. The contractor has a key (or several) that universally fits all cylinders mounted in the locks of the doors. Free entry and exit is thus guaranteed, so work is not hindered by a closed door. However, there is a drawback to this: once the homes are finished, all the building cylinders must be replaced with new, permanent cylinders, each with a unique key. This is a time-consuming job that also consumes a lot of unnecessary material. dormakaba has a great solution in its program that makes replacing the building cylinder unnecessary.

Building key function on the persistent cylinder

Rob Claassen is account manager of mechanical locking systems for dormakaba. He says: "It works quickly and simply: while construction is in progress, the contractor can enter any house with his key when our cylinders with building key function are fitted. These are placed along with the doors. This way, not every construction worker can simply get into places where valuables are already stored or attached. Once construction is complete and the residents move in their first belongings, they can operate the cylinder with their own unique key, whereby the first time - when the door is operated - the cylinder is set to only that one unique key of the resident. After that, the contractor's key is unusable on that lock."

Three generations per cylinder

Besides saving a lot of time and material, the dormakaba cylinder with build key function has another big advantage, reports Rob. "Each cylinder has three generations, as we call it. Once the resident has 'tuned in' their own key so that the contractor no longer has access, then another key can be tuned in. All this requires is performing the same operation with the new key so that the cylinder is reset. The stolen or lost key that the resident had before is then unusable in the cylinder in question."

Good value for money

Meanwhile, this system has also proven itself in the construction of the Zalmhaven Tower in Rotterdam. "There we are talking about 480 apartments where our cylinder with building key function was used. Just imagine how much work it saves? In the old situation, the contractor would have had to replace 480 building cylinders." The strength of dormakaba lies not only in its technology, but also in its good value for money. "That makes it extra interesting to work with," Rob continues. "So you make gains on multiple fronts."

With our cylinders, it is child's play to order a new master key and new loose keys and "arrange" them.

Also in a locking plan

The cylinder with building key function is great for use in a locking plan, says Rob. "Imagine an office complex where the janitor owns a general master key and there are x number of individual keys in the locking plan in circulation. If that master key is lost or stolen, someone could gain access anywhere. With our cylinders, it is child's play to order a new master key and new individual keys and "arrange" them as just described. This restores security in a simple way and renders all previous keys useless."

The cylinders with building key function are available in SKG** and SKG*** version. "Also available are variants with freewheel and priority function. Furthermore, it is good to know that the cylinders are available in different metal colors including in the trendy color black, a top color within residential use currently."
