During the Climate Summit Built Environment of Duurzaam Gebouwd, the winners of the VKG Architecture Prize 2025 were announced. In this 14th edition, the first prize in the new construction category went to Gebouw X by Architecten_Lab on the Gasfabriek Campus in Deventer. In the renovation category, the Statenjachtstraat by Vanschagen Architects in Amsterdam was awarded.
The Climate Summit in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht provided the perfect setting for the award ceremony: sustainability and innovation are central to both the conference and the architecture prize. From thirty entries, the versatile professional jury selected the winning projects. The awards were presented by jury members Karin Dorrepaal (DOOR Architects) and Merijn de Jong (Some architects), led by sustainable entrepreneur Yvette Watson.
The jury praised both winners for their consistency between architectural quality, sustainability and social value. Where many entries excelled on one aspect, these projects managed to strike just the right balance. Building X stands out for its radically thoughtful detachability and circular use of materials with a powerful, industrial look. Statenjachtstraat shows how renovation and expansion can go hand in hand, adding urban quality without demolition. Together, the winners demonstrate how sustainable architecture can be social, feasible and future-oriented.

The Gasworks is a Business Innovation Campus where established companies, startups and scale-ups combine to form a dynamic incubator. Building X, opening in 2024, is a powerful example of detachable architecture that brings together industry, innovation and sustainability.
The jury on this brutalist icon: “Building X on the Gasworks campus in Deventer shows how circular building and characterful design can go hand in hand. With detachable facade elements made of Corten steel and straw, it is a powerful example of future-proof architecture.”
Gas Plant Building X was designed by Marc Harmsen of Architecten_Lab, with profiles from VEKA and window frames from Aarnink Kunststof Kozijnen.

The tower blocks in Amsterdam-North show how renovation can be future-oriented: more housing and more quality, without demolition. A deserved winner, according to the jury: “The Statenjachtstraat shows how renewal and expansion can reinforce each other. By breathing new life into existing buildings with smart steel structures and sustainable facades, a future-oriented residential ensemble is created that adds urban quality without demolition.”
Statenjachtstraat is a renovation project by Rens van Dijk of Vanschagen Architects, KBK Bouw, with profiles by Kömmerling and window frames by Schipper Kozijnen.

Inspiring new construction and renovation, where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand with comfort and style - that is what the VKG Architecture Award stands for. The plastic window frame fits into architecture that looks ahead: versatile, low maintenance and with high quality.
